Too Long Away

I lay still looking out of the window and into the world of lights that is New York City. Even this high above the streets, I can still hear the faint sounds of traffic. Horns blowing and sirens wailing; people yelling although its all muffled. I am frustrated and anxious. I get out of bed, the soft gray silk sheets laying in a pattern that says, “sleepless and hopeless” left behind me without a backward glance. I step out onto the balcony. So far down, the city buzzes like bees around a hive. “Drones” I think to myself and glance out over the expanse of a city of shimmering diamonds. The wind is so soft and warm…a storm is moving in because I can smell the rain in the air. The humid wind leaves my pale sea green gown filmy with just a touch of sweat. It’s the one you gave to me for my birthday. My favorite…your favorite. “This is madness” I say to the sky and in answer I see the first lightning strike that announces the storm’s arrival. I roll my eyes at the Elements. I do that.

I wander back in and leave the door open, letting the wind whip thru the bedroom that only the two people who sleep in it could possibly create. All of the colors that are earthy and warm mixed with the soft colors of the sea. A perfect balance - Earth and Water. I glance at the clock; 1:25 am - this is EARLY for me!!! I’m so sleepy though - but no sleep is coming.
