Artist's Comments

I am Deadra and I am Sorrow. I am the 11th daughter of Lilith the Great Queen of the Earth and for that I am happy. My birth came when my mother’s truest love left forever and her tears covered me the moment I escaped the womb. I believe my mothers Sorrow lives in me, and at times it is overwhelming. Still it is who I am and I am content, hopeful. My mother says my gaze is steady and I believe that it is my strongest gift. I can look into your eyes and see all of your suffering and all of your pain – sometimes things that you yourself do not even know. I hold my gaze steady so that my tears do not spill for each person or spirit that I meet…and I never look my Mother in the eyes, it would be overwhelming. Long ago, when the Tarot was formed I was fashioned as the 9th card in the Celtic Cross – the greatest hope and the greatest fear…this is also true. I am eternally hopeful, and eternally fearful…I am Sorrow.

The limited range of colours works really well. Beautiful work as always :D

Brilliant. Amazing. All of your work has me in awe. This is definitely a :+fav: and a watch too. What is the medium for the Daughters of Lillith series? it looks like graphite or charcoal but the smoothness and the crips lines are perfect. Am tryinig to revive my meager talents and hone my skills and this series is incredibly inspirational to me who has never had any formal art training (decided to cultivate the science geek in me with education.. lol.. what was I thinking!) Would be honored if you would take a look at my own gallery and critique away. Again beautiful.

Thank you. This model has stunning gray eyes and as I started the piece, I decided to run the color throughout to see what effect it would bring. I was happy with the outcome. I nearly made her an Alabaster, but when I saw her range of expressions, and how Dea'dra is so full of Sorrow, yet Hope and Fear - she was just the right choice.

Thank you very much for your kind compliments! As for the medium on the Daughters of Lilith - I use Prisma Color watercolour pencils and make a light sketch, then take a damp brush and go over the lines to soften them. Sometimes I'll do an entire watercolor underpainting with only the pencils, then damp brush it out for the smooth even effect, this keeps the skin tone even. After that, I use Prisma Color colored pencils and go over every inch of the subject softly - I use a magnifying glass (a big one that clips onto my drafting table) shading in the depths and contours. Prisma Color makes a blending pencil that is fabulous and I use them up like crazy! Then over it once again to bring out the finest details, down to lashes and brows. Layering is the key. The underpaint gives the even tone - but its still done with a "pencil" its just smoothed out with the brush. After that its just details.

I would be happy to look at your gallery. Remember that art is about the joy it brings you while creating it, not always the end result. Challenging yourself to new levels is always good, but I keep a portfolio of things I've done from years past that I go back to now and again - to see where I came from - and although the work is not like what I produce today, it was the beginning of it, and I'm proud of it just the same. I think everyone should challenge themselves, its how we grow and learn: evolve - but never forget where we started. I'll have a look at your work tonight or tomorrow. Thank you again! ;-)

You are certainly welcome and the accolades are well deserved. I have used watercolor pencils once or twice but then I guess I didnt have the patience.. I was younger lol. Thanks for the reply and I hope that you arent frightened by my gallery.. ;)

Thank you! That is what her character does. She gazes past our eyes into our souls and knows all our Sorrows. Glad you liked her!
